A watch is four hours. A bell every half hour, cumulative, so the count climbs to eight and then the watch closes and the counting starts over. Nobody aboard is ever told the hour. Everybody aboard always knows it.
The tones are mine and the watches are not quite the sea’s. The arithmetic went first. Then the wanting to know went, which was the point, and also the part that cannot be shown to anyone.
